La Torre de Morales fue una casa-torre, datada según fuentes oficiales en el siglo XVI, y otras como el profesor y catedrático en historia Francisco Amillo (autor del blog histobenidorm) en el XVIII. Esta sirvió para alertar y proteger a los propietarios y a la mano de obra de la huerta en la que estaba situada, de los ataques de corsarios berberiscos.
Esta torre no formaba parte del sistema defensivo costero implantado por la Corona, ya que ésta era de iniciativa privada, y estaba en el interior, integrada en la casa donde se alojaba la familia propietaria.
Cuando los piratas eran avistados por alta mar, se daba la voz de alarma, dando así tiempo a la personas de alrededor a refugiarse en su interior, dada la seguridad que proporcionaba al tener una estructura similar a las torres de vigilancia del sistema defensivo costero.
Además regularmente el tiempo de demora desde que eran avistados los corsarios, hasta la llegada a la explotación agrícola, servía para alertar a las guarniciones del ejército que se encontraban cerca, las cuales repelieron con éxito más de un ataque.
Esta edificación se encuentra en el número 40 de la avenida de Villajoyosa, junto al borde sur de la antigua carretera N-332.
El proyecto consiste en la restauración exterior e interior de la torre, ya que no es posible acceder a su interior por el hecho de que la entrada está tapiada, y el interior en ruinas, siendo el objetivo del plan de restauración que se pueda visitar por dentro, y así admirar una parte interesante de nuestra historia.
A su vez, también se están llevando a cabo renovaciones de otro bienes históricos de la localidad, como la Torre de la Escaleta (en punta del Cavall), el Castillo de la punta Canfalí y el Tossal de la Cala ,sitio que además incluye una novedad que es la app «Benidorm Avatar«, la cual, gracias a su tecnología de realidad aumentada, nos muestra a Fabio, un soldado romano que nos relata como era la vida del asentamiento romano durante la Guerra del Sertorio. Esta app está tanto en español como en inglés y se puede descargar en IOS y Android.
Benidorm restores the Tower of Morales
The Tower of Morales was a watchtower integrated in a house centered in an agricultural exploitation. Dated, according to official sources in the 16th century A.D., and other sources like the professor and historian Francisco Amillo (author of the blog histobenidorm ) in the 18th. Its purpose was to alert and protect the owners and the workers of the orchard where it was based, from the attacks of berber pirates.
This tower was not part of the coastal defensive system made by the Crown, since its building and development was made by private initiative, and it was inland, not in the coast, integrated in the house where the owners lived.
When the pirates were sighted at the sea, people in the area would get alerted, giving them time to get into the watchtower, which provided them with great deffense since it had a simillar structure as the watchtowers of the coastal defensive system.
Also, often the time it took the berber pirates to get to the orchard, was enough for the army garrisons to gather and get there on time, repelling successfully many attacks.
This biulding is based in Villajoyosa Avenue number 40, next to the south border of the old N-332 road.
The project consists in the exterior and interior restorement of the tower, since it is not possible to access to its interior because the entrance is boarded up, and the inside is in ruins, being one of the main objectives of the restorement plan to make the tower visitable in the inside, so people will be able to admire an interesting part of our history.
At the same time, there are other restorements being carried out on historical sites of interest in Benidorm, such as de Tower of Escaleta (in punta del Cavall), de punta Canfalí Castle and the Tossal of La Cala, place that includes a new app called «Benidorm Avatar«, which thanks to its augmented reality technology, shows us Fabio, a roman soldier that tells us how life was in that roman settlement in times of the Sertorian War. This app is in spanish and english and available for IOS and Android.
