Hace una semana, nos hemos enterado por la prensa que un joven artista español afincado en la popular isla neoyorquina de Manhattan, iba a presentar un proyecto bajo el nombre de «Paella Pop». Paella Pop es un proyecto de «arte relacional», según los propios autores este tipo de arte prima la la experiencia y las relaciones en público. Paula Gómez Rosado y Juan Carlos Rosa son los artistas que están detrás del Paella Pop y además J. Carlos es originario de Benidorm.
Por ello, desde VisitBenidorm hemos querido acercarnos a J.Carlos y a su proyecto y preguntarle que nos explique un poco toda está «movida» qué se presentó ayer en el Centro Español La Nacional en Manhattan, y será el 2 de mayo cuando se celebre el primer ‘Paella Pop Day’. ¡Mucha suerte artistas!

Quién eres?
Soy Juan Carlos Rosa Casasola (1988), natural de Benidorm. Vivo a caballo entre mi ciudad, Valencia y ahora Nueva York, aunque dentro de poco marcho una temporada a Berlin gracias a una beca del Máster en Artes Visuales y Multimedia de la Universitat Politécnica de Valéncia. En la misma me especialicé en Pensamiento y Cultura Visual por el Máster Oficial en Producción Artística y fui premiado como Mejor Expediente 2012 de la licenciatura de Bellas Artes. Además complementé mi formación gracias a la beca Erasmus en Alemania en la Akademie der Bildenden Künste en Múnich en 2009 y con diversos talleres y cursos en España, Alemania e Italia.
Considero que el material del siglo XXI no es la piedra o la madera, sino la ropa, los datos y las imágenes publicadas en las redes sociales de internet con dispositivos móviles. Por ello, con la pintura como punto de partida, trato de manera transdisciplinar fenómenos de la sociedad de consumo basados en la relación público-privado.
Creo que vivimos en continuo movimiento y acumulamos, consumimos y generamos de forma acelerada, por eso #BestSeller y #Smartpaint son algunos de los títulos de las series en las que estoy trabajando y que en el pasado año han sido seleccionadas en All Glitched Up de la Tate Britain de Londres, el prestigioso premio de pintura Guasch Coranty en Barcelona, EMERGE en Madrid comisariada por Paco Carpio y el Premio Senyera de Escultura de Valencia entre otras exposiciones. Destacaría la instalación «Cultura Contemporánea» en la Biblioteca de Benidorm gracias a la colaboración de Eva Mayor en la Concejalía de Cultura de Benidorm y la exposición individual HORROR VACUI comisariada por Marisol Salanova presentada en la Fundación Frax de El Albir el pasado verano. Aprovecho para anunciar que el 6 de mayo inauguramos un interesante proyecto llamado PAM! en el Museo del Centro del Carmen en Valencia.
Según los proyectos trabajo con un lenguaje u otro, en individual o con colaboraciones. Me encanta estar rodeado de gente creativa y de ámbitos muy diferentes, ya que juntos salen las mejores ideas y además es muy enriquecedor trabajar en equipo. Actualmente estamos trabajando codo con codo en PAELLA POP mi amiga y artista Paula Gómez Rosado (1986), ya que ambos tenemos una serie de valores e ideas comunes sobre cómo imaginamos el futuro de la sociedad y la influencia del arte en este cambio.
¿Qué es PAELLA POP?
PAELLA POP es un proyecto de arte relacional dedicado a organizar una serie de eventos culturales en los principales núcleos internacionales donde se gesta el arte contemporáneo, la primera edición es en Nueva York el próximo mes de mayo y ya estamos trabajando en las siguientes ediciones de Berlin y Londres. Propone nuevas relaciones transdisciplinares entre las artes y el público asistente, desde un prisma transgresor y en consonancia con los últimos debates de la actualidad.
El motivo central de PAELLA POP, y especial atractivo del evento, es la relación del arte con la elaboración de una gran paella híbrida que mantiene su carácter tradicional de lugar de encuentro y relaciones, pero varía sus ingredientes en función de la cultura en la que se presenta. En cada evento los asistentes disfrutarán de un plato de esta original paella acompañado de performance, danza, música e instalaciones, entre otras disciplinas, gracias a la colaboración de profesionales emergentes residentes en cada ciudad donde se realiza la convocatoria.
El proyecto comienza a ser una comunidad de artistas unidos por un entendimiento común, tejiendo una gran red de artistas emergentes liderada por sus creadores Paula Gómez Rosado y Juan Carlos Rosa Casasola.
PAELLA POP nace en la creencia de que el arte debe ser divertido, interactivo y cuestionador. Arte como experiencia vivencial y de capacidad generadora, sustentado en una base conceptual y filosófica relacionada con las innovaciones en ámbitos del conocimiento. A partir de los planteamientos de Nicolas Bourriaud surge el arte relacional, con el que se pretende propiciar el encuentro y sus sinergias.
Gracias a la presencia e intervenciones de los artistas, numerosos barrios se han visto altamente revalorizados, como por ejemplo el Soho de Nueva York. A día de hoy es en Brooklyn, en el barrio de Bushwick, donde se están experimentando notables cambios. Por ello el día 2 de mayo contribuiremos a la dinamización cultural de la ciudad de Nueva York, creando un espacio de sinergias y reflexión en el edificio donde se encuentra el estudio de Isidro Blasco.
¿Por qué en Nueva York?
El tiempo que hemos estado viviendo en esta «ciudad de las ciudades» nos hemos sentido parte de Nueva York rápidamente. Una ciudad con tanta gente de tantas culturas y con tanto movimiento hace que todos seamos parte de ella. Esto hace que te preguntes de dónde eres, a dónde vas y te encuentras que nos faltan (o sobran) palabras para definir lo que se encuentra fuera de las fronteras de las nacionalidades o los géneros.
Nos preguntamos Paula y yo qué podríamos ofrecer a la ciudad: lo que sentimos y sabemos hacer, sumado a nuestra cultura de origen. Sabemos que podemos invertir energía en construir esta idea tan especial porque está teniendo muy buena acogida en Nueva York, esta ventana al mundo de la visibilidad, por lo que esperamos que PAELLA POP crezca y llegue a mucha gente en otras ciudades. Nueva York es un hervidero de ideas que nos ha dado la energía y ejemplos de ideas triunfadoras que han nacido del mestizaje y la hibridación.
¿Paralelismos e influencia con Benidorm en tu carrera como artista?
Mi ciudad natal ha influenciado en múltiples aspectos en mi carrera. He tenido la suerte de desde pequeño ver la necesidad del inglés como idioma para comunicarme con el mundo, la alegría de ser parte de La Barqueta y disfrutar de la música desde dentro de la orquesta, crecer en la biblioteca de verano y los teatros en el Parque de L’Aigüera, y sobre todo gracias a mi familia y amigos que me han apoyado y apoyan a perseguir mis retos y seguir disfrutando el sueño de ser artista que se fue generando en las clases en L’Atelier de Antonio Peinado.
Desde la parte conceptual ha sido fundamental la heterogeneidad a pequeña y gran escala. Todos somos Benidorm, bien mis padres que llegaron desde Sevilla y Cáceres, bien aquellos que vinieron y vendrán de Francia, Inglaterra, Noruega, Rusia, Marruecos, Ecuador, China y un largo etcétera. Como afortunadamente sucede en gran parte del planeta.
Benidorm tiene muchos puntos comunes con Nueva York: rascacielos de muchos y diferentes diseños en los que vive y viene gente de muchas y diferentes culturas. Ambas internacionalmente ubicadas en el mapa y en las que se han dado y se dan ideas revolucionarias como el acierto del modelo de ciudad vertical.
Poco a poco estamos teniendo una mayor oferta cultural que ofrecer a nuestros visitantes: más música, más danza, más teatro y más arte. Estamos trabajando dentro y fuera de Benidorm personas con mucho talento, por ello quiero agradecer a todos los que confían en nosotros, pues con su apoyo nos dan fuerzas para continuar creando y llevando con mucho orgullo Benidorm en nuestro bagaje.

Who are you?
I am Juan Caarlos Rosa Casasola (1988) and I was born in Benidorm. I live between my city, Valencia and now New York, although shortly I am going to spend a season in Berlin thanks to a scholarship for a Masters degree in Visual Arts and Multimedia from the Politecnica University of Valencia. As well as this, I specialised in ´ thought and visual culture ´, as part of an offcial Masters in artistic production and I was awarded ´ best record 2012´ from the degree of Fine Arts. Besides this, I have complemented my training thanks to an Erasmus scholarship in Germany in the Academy of Bildenden Kunste in Munich in 2009 and with various workshops and courses in Spain, Germany and Italy.
I consider that the material of the 21st century isn´t stone or wood, but clothes. Information and images are published on social networks, the internet and other mobile devices. For this reason and using paint as a starting point, I try to transdiscipline the phenomenons of society, of consumption based on the public-private relationship. I believe that we live in a state of continuous movement and we accumulate, we consume and we generate quickly, for this reason ´ Best Seller´ and ´Smartpaint´ are some of the titles of the series on which I am working and which in the past year have been selected for the ´All Glitched Up´ exhibition at the Tate Britain in London, the prestigeous painting prize , ´Guasch Coranty´ in Barcelona,´ EMERGE´ in Madrid, commissioned by Paco Carpio and the ´Senyera Prize´ from the Sculpture of Valencia amongst other prominent exhibitions. I would highlight the facility, ´Contemporary Culture´in Benidorm library, thanks to the partnership of Eva Mayor of the Department of Culture in Benidorm and the solo exhibition HORROR VACUI, commissioned by Marisol Salanova which was presented by the Frax foundation of Albir last summer. I want to take this opportunity to announce that on 6th May we will inaugurate an interesting project called ´PAM in the Museum del Centro del Carmen in Valencia.
Depending on the projects, I work in one language or another either individually or with partners. I love to be surrounded by creative people of very different talents and scopes, as together we produce the best ideas and besides this, it is a very enriching experience to work in such a team. Actually I am working very closely with my friend and artist Paula Gomez Rosado (1986) on the project ´PAELLA POP´, as we both have a series of values and ideas in common about how we imagine the future of society and the influence of art on this perceived change.
What is Paella Pop?
Paella Pop is a relational art project dedicated to organise a series of cultural events in the priniciple international centres where contemporary art is growing. The first edition is in New York in May and we are already working on our next editions in Berlin and London. I propose new transdiscipline relations between the arts and the viewing public, from a prism transgresor and in consonance with the latest debates of today.
The central theme of Paella Pop, and the special appeal of the event is the relationship between art and the making of a great hyprid paella that maintains its traditional character of its location and it´s relationships, but all its ingrediants and everything else act as a function of the culture in which it presents itself. In each event those attending will enjoy a dish of original paella accompanied by a performance of dance, music and other activities thanks to the coming together of local emerging professionals in each city where a meeting takes place. The project is beginning to be a community of artists joined together by a common understanding weaving a great network of emerging artists led by it´s creators,Paula Domez Rosado and Juan Carlos Rosa Casarla.
PAELLA POP was born in the belief that art should be enjoyed both interactively and disputed. Art as an experimental experience and generating capacity, sustained in a conceptual base and philosophy related to the innovations in areas of expertise.From the approaches of Nicolas Bourriaud surges relational art, with which it is intended to promote the meeting and it´s synergies.
Thanks to the presence and interventions of the artists,numerous neighbourhoods have seen themselves highly appreciated , like for example the New York Soho. As of today, it is in Brooklyn, in the Bushwick neighbourhood where they are experiencing notable changes. Therefore on 2nd May we will contribute to the cultural dynamism of the city of New York, creating a space of synergy and reflection in the building where one can find the studio of isidro Blasco.
Why in New York?
In the time that we have been living in this ´city of cities´, we have quickly felt part of New York. A city with so many people of so many cultures and with such movement that makes us all feel part of it. That makes you ask where you are, where are you going and how you feel and there aren´t words to define what one can find beyond the borders of nationalities or genres.
We asked, Paula and I , what we would be able to offer to the city. what we feel, and we know how to do, by adding to our culture of origin. We know that we can invest energy in building this special idea because it is having a very good reception in New York, this window to the world of visibility, so we hope that PAELLA POP lights up and illuminates many people in other cities. New York is the melting pot of ideas that have given us energy and examples of winning ideas that have been born out of this cross-breeding and hybridization.
Are there parallels and influence with Benidorm in your career as an artist?
My city of birth has influenced me in many aspects during my career.I have had the luck since being small of seeing the need for English as a language to communicate with the world, the joy of being part of ´La Barqueta (the boat)´and to enjoy music from inside the orchestra, to grow in the summer library and the theatres in the Parque de LÁiguera and above all I want to give thanks to my family and friends who have supported me and helped me follow my challenges and continue enjoying the dream of being an artist which was generated in the classes in L´Atelier de Antonio Peinado.
From the conceptual part the heterogeneity has been instrumental from a small to a large scale.We are all from Benidorm, well my parents arrived from Seville and Caceres, while those that came and will come from France, England, Norway, Russia, Morocco, Ecuador, China and a long etc. As fortunately happens in a great part of the world.
Benidorm has many things in common with New York, skyscrapers of many and different designs in which people from many different cultures live. Both internationally located on the map and in which they have been given and give revolutionary ideas as is shown by the success of the model of the vertical city
Little by little we are having a greater supply of culture to offer our visitors, more music, more dances, more theatre and more art. We are working in and out of Benidorm , people with a great deal of talent therefore I want to thank everyone who have trusted us and your support gives us the strength to continue creating and taking with us much pride in Benidorm on our travels.
