The Royal British Legion, District North area in Spain chose Benidorm to launch the 2013 poppy appeal to raise funds to support and give help in time of need and companionship to members and ex-members of the armed forces and their families at home and abroad.. A lot of hard work goes into preparing the event and here we talk to some of the organisers of the event on the day, to tell us more about the event, just before the parade started along Levante beach towards the Rincon de Loix.

In August 1914, a war began in Europe which, by the time it ended in November 1918, had caused untold misery and suffering as well as the deaths and maiming of millions. What was to be done with all these servicemen coming back to England, missing limbs, blinded, gassed, burnt and suffering shell shock and mental trauma? Equally as important was helping those families who had lost their breadwinner.

Separate organisations had been set up to support returning veterans from the Army, Navy and Royal Flying Corps. In 1921, four of these organisations were brought together to form The British Legion.

The poppy was chosen as the symbol of the Legion as this was one flower that had bloomed prolifically among the battlefields. Last year, the generosity of the British residents saw our area of Spain raise over 171,000€, and what is not used for Welfare  here in Spain for the beneficiaries, goes back to England to boost the Poppy income for the veterans at home.

Benidorm ha acogido hoy los actos de la conocida “Poppy Appeal” que organiza The Royal British Legion. La “Poppy Appeal” consiste en la venta de amapolas, fabricadas en su mayoría por personas discapacitadas, y los ingresos se destinan a la ayuda de exmilitares británicos, y sus familiares, de todos los conflictos bélicos posteriores a la Primera Guerra Mundial, incluso los actuales.

En agosto de 1914, se inició una guerra en Europa que, a su final en noviembre de 1918, había causado la miseria y sufrimiento, así como la muerte y la mutilación de millones de personas. ¿Qué iban a hacer con todos esos soldados, con falta de extremidades, cegados, gaseados, neuróticos por el sufrimiento y traumas mentales sufridos al volver a Inglaterra? Igualmente importante fue ayudar a las familias que habían perdido su sostén económico.

Organizaciones independientes se establecieron para apoyar a los veteranos que regresaban del Ejército, la Armada y la Royal Flying Corps. En 1921, cuatro de estas organizaciones se reunieron para formar la Legión Británica.

La amapola fue elegida como el símbolo de la Legión, ya que era una flor que había florecido prolíficamente en los campos de batalla. El año pasado, la generosidad de los residentes británicos de nuestra zona de España llevó a recaudar más de 171.000 €. que se destinaron a Inglaterra para aumentar los ingresos en casa de la amapola de los veteranos.
